Introduction
The Edexcel GCSE combined Science specification covers Biology, Chemistry and Physics in detail. From studying the structure of a cell to acids and alkalis to forces and motion, all the key GCSE Science topics are covered in the combined course.
Content and assessment overview
The Edexcel Combined Science GCSE (9–1) exams consist of six terminal examinations with no coursework. There are required practicals within the course which will also be examined within the 6 terminal exam papers. All the Edexcel GCSE combined Science papers are available at foundation tier and higher tier.
Paper 1: Biology 1 (Paper code: 1SC0/1BF, 1SC0/1BH)
Exam structure:
- Written examination: 1 hour and 10 minutes
- 16.67% of the qualification
- 60 marks
- Content covered: Topic 1 – Key concepts in biology, Topic 2 – Cells and control, Topic 3 – Genetics, Topic 4 – Natural selection and genetic modification, Topic 5 – Health, disease and the development of medicines

Edexcel GCSE Combined Science Assessment Summary:
- There are foundation and higher tier papers available
- A calculator is permitted in every paper.
- Some formulae will be provided but many must be learned.
- Students must sit papers in the same year and of the same tier, so either all foundation or all higher.
- All marks for the Edexcel GCSE Combined Science qualification are awarded in the 6 terminal exams which are sat at the end of year 11 for most students.
