Introduction

When sitting a functional skills maths exam, it can be really useful to first sit a diagnostic assessment. Pass Functional Skills provide free diagnostic tests for both maths and English. These tests help learners determine the appropriate level for them. Alongside their diagnostic assessments, they also offer within their course a way to track the level you are working at.

Diagnostic Assessment – Maths Functional Skills

The free initial assessment and subject knowledge assessment from Pass Functional Skills help learners identify the level they are working at, as well as topics they can focus on to improve their level. Find out more about these:

Initial Assessment

The maths initial assessment offers a unique approach, unlike what is offered by other functional skills providers. Learners are asked questions of varying difficulty across the all topics to help work out a current level. This is the level that they are starting at. Each question caries a specific weight based on its difficulty, it then uses this information to determine a value for the learners initial level. Subsequently, the learner is suggested to enrol on either the level 1 or level 2 course.

Subject Knowledge Assessment

In addition to the initial assessment, Pass Functional Skills also offer the subject knowledge assessment. This gives a learner further insight into topics that they need to focus their revision on. This diagnostic test covers the entire course, pinpointing areas requiring improvement. A list of recommended topics is generated using learners’ answers, aiming their revision towards these topics will help learners improve quickly.

Current Level

As learners progress through the course, their current level adjusts based on their performance on practice questions and topic tests. This metric shows the level at which a learner is currently working. Once a learner’s current level exceeds 2.5, they are generally ready to sit their exam.

ESFA Funding

It is an ESFA requirement to carry out an assessment of current level for those apprentices who do not have evidence of prior attainment of level 2 maths and English qualifications. These assessments must be carried out using tools based on the national literacy and numeracy standards and core curriculum, as stated by the ESFA funding rules. The Pass Functional Skills diagnostics tests help training providers to meet these requirements without incurring any cost.

Conclusion

While the results of the maths initial assessment guide learners towards the appropriate course level, it doesn’t necessarily have to dictate the course they enrol on. It may be the case that a learner is advised to enrol on the level 1 course, but they require the level 2 qualification. In this case, it may be that the learner will need to spend more time on the course to ensure they are ready to sit the exam. Completing the whole course will mean a learner is in the best position to pass.
