English Diagnostic Assessments

They offer two main types of diagnostic tests for English: the initial assessment and the subject knowledge assessment. Let’s explore each of these in detail:

Initial Assessment

Pass Functional Skills initial assessment provides a detailed evaluation of a learner’s starting point in the course. It includes questions covering various topics with varied levels of difficulty. Each question is given a weight based on its complexity and how difficult the topic is. By looking at the number of correct answers and their weightings, a learner’s initial level is determined. This valuable insight enables learners to be suggested the appropriate course to enrol on.

Subject Knowledge Assessment

In addition to the initial assessment, Pass Functional Skills also offer a subject knowledge assessment for English. This diagnostic test gauges learners’ understanding across the entire English course, highlighting areas that require attention. When you have completed the subject knowledge assessment, you will receive a list of recommended topics. These are areas to focus your revision on, helping you pass first time.

Current Level

While learners move through the course, their current level will adjust. This is done based on performance on practice questions and topic tests. The current level metric provides learners with immediate feedback on their progress. Once a learner’s current level exceeds 2.5, they are usually ready to take their level 2 exam.

ESFA Funding

It is an ESFA requirement to carry out an assessment of current level for those apprentices who do not have evidence of prior attainment of level 2 maths and English qualifications. These assessments must be carried out using tools based on the national literacy and numeracy standards and core curriculum, as stated by the ESFA funding rules. The Pass Functional Skills diagnostics tests help training providers to meet these requirements without incurring any cost.

Conclusion

While the initial assessment guides learners towards the appropriate course level, it’s important to note that this is not final. For instance, you may be advised to enrol on the level 1 course but need the level 2 qualification. In this case, extra effort and time spent on the course will prepare you for the level 2 exam. Finishing the entire course equips learners with the necessary skills to be able to pass their exam.

Finally, alongside the English diagnostic tests, you will also find the same for maths. You can learn more about both the maths and English initial tests by clicking the link below.
